Family Information ---Childbirth, Schools and Japanese Classes--- On occasions such as when you have a baby or you want to send your child to school, you are required to go through certain procedures at City Hall. l When you give birth in Japan, the Health Office issues a book known as the Mother and Child Health Handbook (Boshi Kenko Techo), which enables you to get medical check-ups for both the mother and the child. To be issued this book, please complete a Pregnancy Notification form at the Health and Sanitation Section (TEL 242-1131) or at Izumino Welfare and Health Center (TEL 220-2232). When your child is born, you need to have your physician or midwife certify the birth and submit a notification of birth to the Citizen's section in City Hall (TEL 220-2241) within 14 days of the birth. Also, within 30 days, you must inform the Kanazawa branch of the Nagoya Immigration Office (TEL 222-2450). In addition, please notify your nearest embassy or consulate and apply for the child’s passport. Facilities to take care of children from birth until they start school if their parents both work and cannot take care of them during the day. For information about day-care centers, contact the Children’s Welfare Section, Kanazawa City(TEL 220-2299). A pre-school education facility. Most are privately-run so you should contact them directly for admittance procedures. You can contact the kindergarten Association (TEL 222-9123) for further information on the types of kindergarten available. The Japanese education system has six years of primary (elementary) education, 3 years of intermediate (junior high), and three years of secondary (senior high). Primary and intermediate education is compulsory by law. This law does not apply to foreign nationals, but you can send your child(ren) to school if you wish. The school year starts in April, and ends the following March. For admittance to primary or intermediate schools, contact the Education General Affairs Section, Kanazawa City (TEL 220-2477).
