Shopping and Dining in Kanazawa

Buying food, daily necessities and clothing is essential to your daily life. Types of stores and shopping areas in Kanazawa are as follows.
If you look hard enough, bargains can be found at all levels. Flyers in the daily newspapers will give you notice of the main sales, which change seasonally. Other than the price, you must pay 5% consumption tax.

SHOPPING

DEPARTMENT STORES
Sell everything from high-class fashion merchandise to daily necessities, with food courts in the basement and restaurants on the top floor(s). There are two major department stores, Daiwa and Meitetsu M-Za, both conveniently located downtown.

SHOPPING CENTERS/MALLS
Sell various items as food, daily necessities, clothes and electric appliances. In general, prices are lower than department stores. These shopping centers tend to be in the suburbs where you might need a car to get.

Mainly sells food products

CONVENIENCE STORES
Open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The main chains in Kanazawa are Circle-K, Family Mart, Daily Store and Lawson. They are easy to find.

SPECIALTY SHOPS
There are many large-scale speciality shops that feature books, electric appliances and computers, or furniture. Many of them are located out of the downtown area.

KANAZAWA UNIVERSITY COOP SHOPS
Kakuma Campus Coop shop has stationery, books and magazines as well as snacks and beverages. Also, at the travel counter, you can purchase air/train tickets for your trip.

SHOPPING AREAS

KATAMACHI & KORINBO AREAS
The central area of Kanazawa, with all kinds of shops, restaurants, pubs, etc. is always bustling with people. One of the major department stores, Daiwa is in Korinbo.

TATEMACHI AREA
A boutiques and fashion area.

MUSASHIGATSUJI AREA
Another department store, Meitetsu M-Za and Daiei (a supermarket) are at the center of this area. In addition, there are many reasonably priced shops in the Yoko-yasue-cho Arcade. In Omicho market, fresh seafood, vegetables and fruits are sold at low prices.

DINING

EATING ON CAMPUS

Each campuse has a cafeteria which offers a variety of meals, and also sells snacks and sandwiches. Each cafeteria has different hours of operation.

RESTAURANTS

There are various kinds of restaurants and diners downtown and around the city.

Family Restaurants
Reasonably priced, with extensive menus, these are popular with families. Major chains in Kanazawa are Cocos, Gusto, Saizeriya, etc.

Fast Food Shops
ln addition to the world-wide chains, McDonalds and KFC, there are national hamburger chains, Mos Burger and Mr.Donut. Or, if you want sushi at a Japanese style fast food shop, there are “revolving sushi” chains.

Many restaurants have menu with pictures, or glass display case containing plastic models of items on their menu, which are helpful for you to choose.
